Planned Parenthood - Tuesday, January 31, 2012 3:22 PM
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has announced that it will stop supporting lifesaving breast cancer screening for low-income and underserved women at Planned Parenthood health centers.

It's a deeply disappointing decision — made even more alarming because politically motivated groups and individuals determined to undermine women's access to care appear to have successfully intimidated the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to withdraw this critical support.

Over the past five years, Komen funds have enabled Planned Parenthood health centers to provide nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and referrals for more than 6,400 mammograms. These cancer detection and prevention programs saved the lives of women who often had nowhere else to turn for care.

But when anti-choice groups began criticizing the Komen Foundation for partnering with Planned Parenthood, the foundation ended its support for Planned Parenthood health centers. We know our opponents put their ideology over women's health and lives. What we never expected is that an ally like the Komen Foundation would choose to listen to them.

Planned Parenthood - Tuesday, January 31, 2012 3:42 PM
I am saddened and disappointed that a pro-woman, pro-healthcare organization such as SGK would bow to the pressure of woman-hating, anti-choice activists.  Regarding the claim that this action is being taken because Planned Parenthood is under investigation, I am unimpressed.  So now you have reinforced the idea that, to pressure other organization to defund services, all someone needs to do is make a claim of wrongdoing whether its founded in reality or not.  Merely the accusation and ensuing investigation, spearheaded by an agenda driven misogynist, is enough to scare away support.  Well, your actions have shown me that my breast cancer research support will have to find its way to the cause through other channels.

I am VERY disappointed in you, the decision makers at Susan G. Komen

I totally agree. Contributions should be made to Planned Parenthood so they can continue to screen uninsured women rather than this foundation.

If this is in fact, true, I totally agree!

I can not believe an organization that supposedly wants to help women prevent breast cancer is caving to the far-right radicals. Do only rich women who can afford a doctor deserve care? Porr children losing their moms to cancer is OK? 3% of what planned parenthood does is abortion and that is what this is all about. PP helps ALL women and you don't have the courage to stand up to these religious radicals who don't care if women and families suffer as long as they can weaken PP. PP is always "under investigation" b/c the right will not rest until we are under Christian biblical law, not democratic law. Your message rings empty.

I am also disappointed in this decision by Komen to withdraw grants for Planned Parenthood, which is such a vital medical resource for women across this country.  I will continue the fight against cancer by contributing funds to other non-profits whose political motivations are more transparent.

Go to the Washington Post or Associated Press affiliated sites.  This is accurate that Komen is withdrawing grant money from Planned Parenthood.

I hope this "report" is untrue. However, if it is true, SGK should be ashamed and it will cost them dearly. I am sick at the thought that this country is being held hostage by fanatics once again.

Also, people love to characterize those who are "pro-choice" as being pro-abortion. They are two entirely different concepts.

I am deeply disappointed in the SGK Foundation for their decision to end support of breast cancer screenings for low income women through Planned Parenthood, a trusted women's healthcare organization.

SGK, rise above the propoganda and petty politics and think of the thousands of women who received much needed care thanks to your support of Planned Parenthood -- support funded by donations from women like me.

What an unfortunate decision for an organization that purports to be an advocate for women and women's health.
