Censorship Causes Blindness
-
Wednesday, March 21, 2012 4:14 PM
I recently posted a ton of content that has all been erased. None of the content was offensive it merely informed. I only have one question... Why does SGK only spend 20% of their budget on cancer research when their creed and fundraising events is all about finding a cure. This website is titled "Susan G Komen for the Cure". Why doesn't SGK commit to at least half their budget. I won't be surprised if this gets censored as well. It seems nobody can provide an answer to this contradiction. It is easier to just censor it.

To the best of my knowledge none of your earlier posts were deleted at all, perhaps you dont have the time filter set to the beginning?? (you get an option for this at the bottom of the page) ...I just C&P this link from the Hot Topics forum where all your posts can be seen http://apps.komen.org/Forums/tt.aspx?forumid=76 As to your question, I dont think anyone here can answer this for you as we all are dealing with fighting BC right now but if you contact Komen Admin by pm or e mail I'm sure they can provide the info you request.

I think the info on the snapshot link should be made more public, it that is possible. The reason I say this is because the incorrect notion that "only 20%" goes to research for the cure has taken on a life of its own. It's as if the rest of the dollars are spent frivilously. People think that since "for the cure" is the logo that more should be spent on research. Maybe they are right. I had a woman, who consideres herself well informed, use that figure as a reason to stop helping Komen. She stated that she thought there was enough "awareness" of breast cancer and more funds should be invested in an actual "cure". So for what it's worth, perhaps Komen can try to correct some false and unrealistic propaganda that is currently being bandied about. It couldn't hurt.

For me, "the cure" isn't just about research. If an uninsured woman gets a mammogram and treatment because of a Komen grant and she beats her cancer, that is a "cure." If someone is educated to notice a change in her breast by Komen, that is part of the "cure." If Komen leads the fight to make sure that the poor get the same access to the newest treatments as the rich, then that's part of the mission towards the "cure." Komen gives more to breast cancer research projects than any non-govermental agency IN THE WORLD. If part of their mission is to also help the people who are already being affected by breast cancer, then I see them as a well-rounded organization that is working at every aspect of the disease, for now and the future. Informant, I keep trying to figure out what your stake in this is--most of us have fought the beast personally...why do you feel that we don't know anything about it when we've lived it? You seem very determined to get an answer to your question. Maybe you haven't realized that none of us are Komen employees--we're on this board to get help and to support each other--Komen funds this site as one of the many things they do to help the people who are facing breast cancer in some way. I agree with Trish, that your question might be better answered by contacting Komen directly. Good luck. Joyce

Joyce, You are right in what you say. However, I believe that positive information somehow has been lost with all of the negativity that is out there lately. There is a lot of turmoil at Komen right now and anything that they can do to stop the bleeding would be beneficial. I am really concerned about the impact this down draft will have on corporate giving and sponsorship as long as the controversy is alive. On the other hand, some might feel that the less said, the better.

Nuzzy, I wasn't disagreeing at all with what you said--the powers to be at Komen made a huge, huge mistake, and I'm really surprised at how little damage control they've done....I'm with you that there should be much more factual information coming out that can help dispel all of the false hoods. My note to Informant was just trying to figure out why he keeps asking the same question here when he doesn't want to hear any answer any of us give him.... Joyce

The Komen affiliates around the country were totally blindsided by Nancy Brinker's original announcement and what followed after that. Now I read that there are shake-ups in Dallas as well as other places, including Portland. This entire episode has brought out the most vicious, frightening responses I have ever read in all of my 76 years. I cannot believe the malice that resides in the hearts and minds of people on both sides of the argument who claim they mean well. I almost hesitate to write this because it will no doubt prompt a venimous, vindictive response. So sad - really, really sad.
