My daugher in France , she is 31, was just started on levothyroxine.  I believe her TSH was 5.34.  From what I have heard, the Europeans start more on meds with a high normal and the research being done is suggesting that.  She still complains  of fatigue and sleep issues but she has had many stressors lately too along with a 2 year old.  My Mother had her thyroid irradiated and also one niece.  It also can be a family issue.  Julie, hope you are doing ok and get more answers to your questions.

I want to add that both Graves Disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) are auto-immune diseases. Fatigue and anemia often go along with that phenomena.  I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, another auto-immune disease. So fatigue and lack of stamina has been a part of my life for years.

In other words, do not look for thyroid replacement meds to solve all problems. It may not happen.

Re:thyroid ??? - Monday, April 02, 2012 8:29 AM
I have been struggling with my thryoid for the past 6 months, and my doc initially was mumbling about a stat scan b/c she was worried about c.  The scan was neg for malignancy, and I was recently dx'd with Graves disease dx, which causes hyperactive thyroid symptoms.    I started with a gradual weight loss and dropped about 27 lbs in about a year.  My heart rate was constantly in the 90-110 range and would even wake me from sleep bounding, along with constant sweating (hot flashes too).  Although I was jumpy, I didn't feel energetic, (just crappy) attributed it to my ooph and having no circulating estrogen, until my doc was alarmed during a routine visit when my heart rate was 128.  My numbers have been rising(T3,T4) and dropping (TSH), although my antibodies seem to be constant  I just started methimazole and already see a difference in 5 days.

Julie, I know 3 women who have had thryoid cancer, and after a thyroidectomy, had no lasting voice or other problems, and wre essentially cured by the surgery.  They were all nurses working on the same unit and all dx'd with in 1 1/2 years of each other .

Have you had a thryoid scan or thyroid US?

Although it's not deemed "medically urgent", you will still worry until it's done.  I would look for a "second opinion" and if that doc has an earlier opening, choose her..  As far as the link between thryoid and breast cancer, I found this.

I had thyroid cancer in 1981 and have had no voice problems - I did have a slight problem for a bit after surgery but my voice is normal. Thyroid cancer is very slow growing. Having follow ups as far apart as 6 months is normal. That being said if you want an earlier apt you should call. Also all women who have had both breast and thyroid cancer should be tested for Cowden's Syndrome. Good luck to you.

Wow! Thanks Sharon and Caroline, sure seems like there is a link between bc and thyroid issues. My head is spinning from all the information and will go back and re-read the links. My niece-in-law's mom also had bc and thyroid cancer. Sure am hoping my bx's come back clear. Hope and strength, Julie

Re:thyroid ??? - Tuesday, April 03, 2012 3:25 PM
I did not get to read all of the articles because I declined to "sign up". But I wonder what comes first, the thyroid problem or the breast cancer. It was thought at one time that radiation treatments for bc caused thyroid problems. Then I have read that thyroid supplements not only can speed up the thyroid but also bc cells.

It is known that women tend to have auto-immune diseases and thyroid problems much more than do men. Women also get bc more than men. So the fact that women have both thyroid disease and bc is not surprising. I developed thyroid disease much earlier than when I was actually diagnosed. It took my then doctor to finally recognize my problem when I came close to being comatose.  The man never included TSH testing in routine blood work even though I complained of fatigue all the time. My entire body was shutting down. My bc was diagnosed approximately 14 years later.

NN, I pasted the second article for you

Abstract

The controversial relationship between benign thyroid diseases and breast cancer (BC) has been investigated for over 50 years. Despite extensive population studies, the results as a whole have been inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to collate and analyse available data, calculating a pooled odds ratio (OR) of the risk of BC in patients diagnosed with benign thyroid diseases. Studies were obtained from a database search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Current Contents Connect and Google Scholar with additional cross checking of reference lists. Inclusion criteria required a confirmed diagnosis of a benign thyroid disease, reporting of an OR or data to calculate an OR (and 95% confidence interval, CI) and the use of an internal control group as the comparator. Collated data was assessed for heterogeneity and a pooled OR calculated. 28 studies were included in the meta-analysis. There was significant evidence of an increased risk of BC in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, evident in a pooled OR 2.92 (95% CI 2.13–4.01). In addition, the results supported an increased risk associated with the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies (OR 2.02, 95% CI 1.63–2.50) and goitre (OR 2.26, 95% CI 1.39–3.69). Subgroup analysis of antibody presence revealed increased risk associated with both anti-TPO (OR 2.64, 95% CI 1.82–3.83) and anti-TG (2.71, 95% CI 1.58–4.69). Quantitative analysis of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism was not significant. While these results indicate an association between thyroid auto-immunity and BC, further prospective studies are required to definitively prove causality.

Re:thyroid ??? - Tuesday, April 03, 2012 5:32 PM
Thanks for the info.

On Sunday, 60 Minutes had a very interesting and convincing story on the connection between refined sugar cancer and just about every human ailment. I just believe cancer has played a part in human existence and always will. Cell changes take place all the time and for the most part, nothing bad happens. I, for one, cannot go through each day worrying about it and jumping on every new bandwagon that comes along. But it does make for interesting reading.
