Make caps or not?
-
Sunday, August 26, 2012 8:38 PM
I am wondering if chemo caps are welcome from friends of those who have lost their hair during chemo. I read that the scalp is very sensitive and gets cold easily. I made a couple of caps for a neighbor when she lost her hair during chemo. She took them and mumbled her thanks, but didn't seem very happy to get them. She wasn't the nicest person, however, so when a coworker I really liked lost her hair to chemo, I carefully made her four pretty caps. I lined them with the softest knit so her scalp would be warm and not irritated. She wasn't at work the day I brought them, so I left them on her desk with a note. She didn't say anything to me the next two times I saw her, so I finally asked if she had gotten them. She said she had and said something about the wig being itchy and she wore caps at home. She told me she had written a thank you note that was somewhere. She didn't say anything about them being nice or anything. Is it wrong to make chemo caps? Are they not appreciated? I am thinking maybe I made a faux pas or something?

Please keep making caps! I LOVE all of the ones that people gave me. One of my favorite ones I was given was from where I got my chemo. A sweet lady, like you, made a bunch of different kinds, different colors and donated them to Texas Oncology. Maybe you would consider doing something like this. I didn't wear a wig so I lived my variety of caps. Don't take the responses of others personally, chemo does some strange things to people's heads! So keep up your good works! Thank you for caring! Love, Anna Rae

Thanks for the input. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong or embarrassing. I've had my own bout with cancer, though it wasn't breast cancer and I didn't have to have chemo. But I know how scary it is,and how frightened I was every time I had to go in for a blood test every week or two for a year. I'll keep making caps!

buggy, I have made pouches for surgical drains for mast ladies since my dx 4 years ago. I generally don't offer them to anyone who doesn't request, except I once made them for a neighbor who was having a double mastectomy. Aside from creating a dedicated post in this forum, you can make a bunch every other month or so and take them to your local cancer center for patients in need. They usually have a resource room with donated wigs, caps, ect.
