upper R quadrant ultrasound
-
Monday, October 08, 2007 12:41 PM
I'm having my exchange surgery Wednesday. But it is not related to my question below Tuesday I'm having an Upper Right Quadrant Ultrasound, per my primary care doctor. He will not tell me what it's for. Other than my liver counts (liver function) is high. But I don't think the liver is in the R upper quadrant. Yes my original breast cancer was in my right breast. Have any of you had an upper right quadrant ultrasound? My thought is that he suspects the cancer has spread to my lungs? But then of course, my thoughts always rush to the cancer recurrence diagnosis. Do you guys have any thoughts? I don't even know what body parts are up there, other than lungs. Many thanks....I may not be able to answer, but will read responses.

Hi Marsha! Is the R side the side that your tumor was located? I don't think he would be looking to cancer that spread to your lungs, I think that would show up better on a Chest xray. Did you have that done before your surgery. I am not that familiar with the exchange surgery. Maybe they just want to evaluate any scar tissue, etc. ahead of time? Just a thought. That's a shame that your primary doc won't tell you what it is for, can you call your surgeon? Good luck on Wednesday! Kerry

Hey Marsha, The right upper quadrant generally refers to the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, not the entire trunk. The liver and gall bladder are the main organs in your RUQ, and both are well-evaluated by ultrasound. Usually an abdominal ultrasound w/ special attention to the RUQ would be ordered, but maybe your doctor wants to ONLY look at the RUQ and is unconcerned about other things that would be looked at in a full abdominal ultrasound (spleen, kidneys). I bet he is doing this just to follow-up your liver enzymes, and hopefully all will be well! My prayers will be w/ you on Wednesday!Anne

Hi Marsha, Lots of prayers and positive thoughts coming your way. You must be so happy that your exchange date is almost here. I agree with Anne S that they are just following up your liver enzymes. Mine have been elevated for years, probably in association with my dx of ulcerative colitis. I know how easy it is to say try not to worry about it, so I won't say that, but know I will be praying extra hard for you this week. Before you know it, you will be on the road to recovery .... and Paris! Hugs, Diane

Hi Marsha, I had one of those a couple of weeks ago to check out my liver and gallbladder. I've had a dull ache in that area for YEARS and my doc wanted to rule out gall stones. They saw nothing wrong. Good thing is it's a really easy test. You just lay there and they run that thing over your tummy and sides, like a baby untrasound. Just in different places than the baby would be . The greatest thing about it was that, that slippery jelly they put on you first is now WARM!!! Wooo Whoo!!!! Wish I'd a thought of that. I'd be rich right now!! Good luck, I hope they find nothing. Take Care, Marie

The fact that he won't tell you what it's for would raise a red flag for me, in terms of the doctor, not the diagnosis. I personally would not stay with a doctor that did not share information when I had requested it.
