Hot Flashes - Friday, April 28, 2006 2:07 PM
I'm a 4 year/3 mo survivor. I have suffered with hot flashes and night sweats during that entire period and have tried every natural remedy allowed by my doctor and also some prescriptions that are supposed to relieve them. After reading an article in the New York Times, I talked to my doc and began taking Neurontin (Gabapentin-generic), which is supposed to work well.

Side affects for me are dizziness, lack of focus, just basically feeling like I came off a three day bender.

I was just wonder if anyone else has experience with this medication for hot flashes/night sweats. If so, with what side affects and how long did it take you to get used to the med.

I have slept through the night all week with the exception of one night - so that is one positive.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Marsha,

I took gabapentin for about two years - I too am a 4 year survivor - I slowly went off of all meds last year.  The gaba made me loopy for about four months, but after that was fine.  It did help with the hot flashes which have pretty much dissappeared and/or are very mild.

Hope this helps!

Marsha, I don't know if you mentioned if your were on a hormonal drug like Tamoxifen. I had some pretty serious hot flashes and night sweats about years 2-3 on Tamoxifen, but they did eventually go away. So hopefully, what you're feeling is temporary.****One thing that helped me with the night sweats was a "chillow." You can order them on-line--it is a thin, water-filled pad that you can put in your pillow case to keep your head cool. Joyce
