I completely support this split! Planned Parenthood does give out birth control pills (do they really educate the young women on the possible clotting issue?), and perform some other services, but they also perform abortions, and therefore I cannot have anything to do with a company that supports them. Hence, I never donate to United Way, instead I donate directly to the groups I feel should be given support, as I have the funds to of course. I am much more likely to support the Komen group now that they are not supporting abortions. I am a nurse, and a woman, and support finding more effective treatments, and possibly a cure, for breast cancer.

The media and response of the last few days has been extremely unsettling from the perspective of a woman and survivor.  Yes, Komen made a mistake (though I'm still not exactly sure what that was).  But doesn't a 30-year track record count for anything with women?  Does the awareness-raising, agenda setting, research funding accomplishments matter?  What about the millions who have been served?

Komen funded PP initiatives so they would examine women's breasts while they were being examined in the first place.  PP does NOT do any mammograms and refers women with breast issues to Komen-funded providers.

There is a great book called The Twisted Sisterhood...many of the concepts apply here. No one can hurt women more than other women...seems to be one of the things we do very well.

I am most angry at the mud slung and hit-and-run tactics used by PP.  Hope the money they raised short-term holds out because they won't be getting any support from me.  I will work twice as hard with Komen and contribute even more.  It is important to keep breast cancer a priority on the national agenda, increase awareness and service to minority women and those close to the poverty line.

My wife is a 20-year breast cancer survivor and for years the two of us have proudly marched in parades or "Walks" supporting SGK and cancer research. We wanted to assure women that breast cancer -- even breast cancer resulting of single or double mastectomies -- is no reason to hide or be ashamed. Sadly, we will not be in those parades and Walks anymore because we cannot support a foundation that has any relationship with a baby-killing machine like Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a virtual Auschwitz for unborn babies. Adios, Susan G. Komen. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Handel resigned. Thank goodness. SGK has a very long way to go before they can be trusted again. But arranging Handel's resignation was step one. Changing Brinker's role and getting rid of a few of the board members would definitely show us that SGK is trying to act responsibly in the wake of last week's events.

Handel is a hero for unborn children.  Now SGK is a left winged organization, congratulations.  You got what you wanted.  I will no longer support any of you leftwinged baby killing cancer survivors.  To hell with you.  Literally.

It's a lot easier to accept a mistake when they admit why they did it.  So far, they've lied.  How does one get over that when SGK still isn't telling the truth?  We have emails from KH that ADMITS it was political.  So why the continued denials?  That speaks to integrity.  And SGK still isn't being honest.  Therefore, I can't get over it.

Komen funded PP initiatives so they would examine women's breasts while they were being examined in the first place.  PP does NOT do any mammograms and refers women with breast issues to Komen-funded providers.

That doesn't change what Komen did.  It doesn't make it right and sure as heck doesn't justify WHY they did it.

There is a great book called The Twisted Sisterhood...many of the concepts apply here. No one can hurt women more than other women...seems to be one of the things we do very well.

Let's be clear.  Koman hurt women.  Koman is an organization.  Women speaking up is what got them to change their policy.  Women spoke up on behalf of other women.  Yay for women.

It is important to keep breast cancer a priority on the national agenda, increase awareness and service to minority women and those close to the poverty line.

Koman gives less than any other cancer organization to research.  I had issues with Koman long before this.  Heck, many other websites and my breast cancer support group had issues that predate what Koman just did.  I think we need a little less "awareness" and more research.

That's mighty Christian of you.  It reminds me of something Jesus would say.  It's not like Jesus hung out with the poor or anything.  I think your response puts you in the same category as those baby killers.  I'm not an expert or anything but I'm pretty sure Jesus values ALL life and not just that of babies.  Just saying.

It's easy to judge when one isn't in the position to need help, assistance, or the services of PP.  Why don't we let God do the judging and let poor people get their freaking breast checks, okay?

(On a side note, how come I can't edit my other post?  I forgot a backslash and I can't fix it)

1.Awareness and research go hand-in-hand. Less awareness gets less research. 2.While it is much easier to get wrapped up in emotion and ideology, mammograms are not included in the services provided by Planned Parenthood. Repeat: Zero as in not 1 woman had a mammogram at any planned Parenthood site. (which does not mean PP doesn't provide an important service to women) 3."In the most recent Gallup poll on abortion, as many Americans described themselves as pro-life as called themselves pro-choice.....These results do not vary appreciably by gender: half of American women described themselves as pro-life." (New York Times, Ross Douthat, 2/5/2012). Women and men feel strongly and are divided on the issue of abortion which only underscores why Komen may have wanted to find another alternative to PP.
