Re: SGK dropping support for Breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood centers: - Wednesday, February 01, 2012 12:07 PM
I support Komen's decision!  Planned Parenthood is a huge business and they are all about making money off women - especially those who are low-income. I think we will all be shocked by the congressional investigations.  It is right for Komen to step away from Planned Parenthood right now.  I wish they had done it years ago. Too bad it took a Republican to stand up for women's rights, eh?

Very disappointed in Susan G Komen for dropping support to Planned Parenthood.  I give to both organizations because I am a WOMAN!!!  Will drop my support of Susan G Komen!  Heavily involved in running a golf tournamet whose whole proceeds goes to Susan G Komen!  Won't be involved this year!

Although I'm a new member to this site, my family has supported SGK for years.  Too bad that, instead of pursuing their mission of supporting women with breast cancer, they've decided to become a political arm of the religious right.

I suspect that the long-term goal here isn't just defunding PP: it's forcing PP to cut back on non-abortion services so the religious right can say "see, we told you, all PP does is abortions!"

No more $$$ from me, period.  Also, I'm going to ask my company and my legislature to stop supporting this organization.  Too bad for the many dedicated SGK workers and volunteers who have been betrayed by their management.  My hard-earned greenbacks are going to PP.

I am so thankful to Komen for discontinuing support of PP!  I have never donated to Susan G Komen for the Cure BECAUSE of their affiliation with PP.

I work at a non-profit serving pregnant women in poverty in DC, and I have seen first hand how PP gives low dose birth control to women, likely to result in unintended pregnancy.  Also, PP hardly ever offers mammograms.  I challenge you to call for yourself!

So sad that SGK has decided to chose to support the best interest of their political views rather than the best interest of women who benefit from their organization. I have supported SGK with volunteer groups at walks/runs, health fair affiliations, personal donations and have had breast cancer touch my life through friends and family. I will no longer support SGK until they put women before politics. I will chose to give my support to Planned Parenthood instead.

I too will no longer support SGK because of their failure to support poor women for whom Planned Parenthood is their only source of healthcare. I just came by to get a list of Komen sponsors so I can let them know I won't be buying their products. And then I noticed the message boards.

As a former Affiliate Board member and Race Chair, I am appalled that Komen would make the decision for all who donate to the Cause to not fund Planned Parenthood.  Under Komen funding guidelines, organizations that provide the lowest cost per patient and serve the highest-need population receives priority funding. This should be the ONLY criteria used to fund breast health services.  Shame on Komen for taking away the rights of the Affiliates to decide what organizations best serves their communities.

SGK policy as of 2/1/2012 Shame on you. - Wednesday, February 01, 2012 12:56 PM
AS our health care system has slowly morphed in to a 3 tiered level of care available to the public - SGK has shown their true colors- and none of them are pink. Those that are wealth can get the best care then the insured but not insured well and at the bottom are the uninsured and the poor.
I could not believe the news today that all of those fundraiser- as fun as they are- will never fund screening and education on breast health and biopsies and referrals for surgery to Planned Parenthood. this is not politics!! It is life or death for many!
I won't go into how many of my family and friends have had breast cancer and the ones I have lost. Or that a family member is a radiologist that does almost all of his required CME (continuing medical education)on Mammography because his sister died at 30.  But I will say that I will never ,ever donate to or attend any of the Komen functions again.
I would encourage everyone to skip the middle man here and donate directly to M.D. Anderson CancerCenter in Houston, or any of the programs that are doing cutting edge research and to programs that get education and screening mammograms to the underserved.
I tried but could not find on the Komen website the names and websites of the places they actually donate to but it would be a good place to start to differ your donations directly to an organization or research center that is not into politics as this one is. We need a new place to rally around.

Karen Handel, keep your politics out of women's health! - Wednesday, February 01, 2012 1:24 PM
SCORE:

Blastocyst: 1
Women: 0

Right-wing neocons are a hypocritical bunch, aren't they?  They claim to be pro-life, but really it's more about saving the blastocyst and killing the child!  They're all about controling a woman's body by outlawing abortion ("pro-life"), but they are also:
  • Pro-war
  • Pro-death penalty
  • Pro-guns
  • Anti-single payer health system
Save the blastocyst, kill the child!
