Removal of Ovaries & Recovery Time
-
Tuesday, November 08, 2005 12:07 PM
Hi, My MD would like me to have my ovaries removed laprascopically instead of giving me Lupron every 3 months to put them "to sleep" along with Tamoxifen. I'm wondering how the surgery and recovery time are for this procedure. I wasn't looking forward to MORE surgery, but I'm thinking it may be a better way to go. Thanks for all your help!! Lynda

Easy Recovery

Hi Lynda, I had my ovaries removed lap. on Oct. 13th. I am absolutely fine. It was done as same day surgery, I did take pain meds for about 3 days to make sleep easier. Absolutely no other problems. I was able to handle stairs the first night, and within a week I was taking short walks outside. Now I do my regular route at the regular speed. I'd have to say my biggest complaint was the itching at the bellybutton site incision! Thought I'd lose my mind over that one. Good luck to you. Enjoy a few days of decreased activity and then a rather rapid recovery! > >Hi, > > My MD would like me to have my ovaries removed > laprascopically instead of giving me Lupron every 3 months > to put them "to sleep" along with Tamoxifen. > > I'm wondering how the surgery and recovery time are for this > procedure. > > I wasn't looking forward to MORE surgery, but I'm thinking > it may be a better way to go. > > Thanks for all your help!! > > Lynda

Dear Lynda, I just posted something about this and then seen your post. Did you get them removed? and how are you doing? Michelle I'm having the same problem with the weight gain. It's just terrible. I have decided not to eat anything. lol. But seriously, watch your sugar intake. For me anything with sugar goes straight to my waist and bottom. Alot of it is water retention

Lynda---I had a total abdominal hysterectomy with ovaries out 7 months ago, which was 2 nights/3 days in hospital,6 weeks of recovery (no heavy lifting). Laprascopic removal of ovaries is often done as same day surgery with 1-2 weeks recovery time. I wanted it done that way, but my ruptured ovary was way too large when they found it to be removed that way. So I'm happy to hear that you don't have to go thru the open abdominal route. > > Lynda

Hi Bonnie, I just saw your related post. I'm still up in the air about which way to go. My MD gave me my 1st Lupron shot on Mon. 11/7, but had to run some blood tests to see if I am prone to blood clots before putting me on Tamoxifen. If I had my ovaries removed he could put me on Tamoxifen or one of the "Post Menopausal" drugs available....which have just as bad side effects if you ask me. It's all so confusing......I still don't know what to do, but will have the results of the blood work by Friday, so I will update you then.
