Anyone here tried Reiki? - Thursday, October 07, 2010 11:15 PM
I had a session a few weeks ago and found it very, very relaxing and I plan on going back for another session in the near future.

My massage therapist does Reiki --  I always believed she has blessed hands.......

I had another session yesterday. She also did something called quantum touch and I could feel heat coming out of my right breast which was the cancer side. I felt so calm and centered when she was done. Once I get a few more months out from my surgery, I want to try yoga as well. I recommend reiki ladies. You have to have an open mind to it though to get the maximum benefit from it.

Hi there

Sounds though you are getting a lot of benefit from it.  I did try it once, but couldn't quite imagine a flower blooming from my head as I was told to do.  I probably didn't click with the Teacher as I have friends who would never miss their Reiki session.  I do a bit of yoga when I workout and find it so calming and great for balance.

Hi Shortie1.  I should be shortie2 as when I last had my height checked I was 5' 1/2".  I thought I was 5'2".  I wanted to ask you what Reiki is.  It sounds strtess relieving but not exactly sure about what you are doing. If you can, let me know.  Thanks,    Mary L

It's energy work. Obviously it's alternative medicine and if you don't have an open mind to it, it's not going to do you much good I don't think. It promotes relaxation and healing, and reduces stress is what I was told by the lady that did my first session. They put their hands over you, sometimes they touch you, sometimes they don't, sometimes it feels like they are but they aren't. It might sound really wacky, but I swear it works!! They just move their hands over you wherever they feel necessary- and if they do touch you its nothing like groping or anything that makes you uncomfortable- it shouldnt be anway! Try it if you can, its really beneficial, if you keep an open mind to it.

Shortie1` and Mary1- You can try Reiki on yourself. Just cup your hands toward each other in front of your chest and relax your minds, concentrating on the healing energy from above. You should feel the heat and radiating pulse in the air between the two hands.  What Reiki does is take this healing energy from above and uses the Reiki Instructor as the conductor of the energy into your body to help heal it.
As an occupational therapist I found this very interesting after attending a workshop on it and took the first level of Master Reiki. Many of my patients felt it helped.  I used it on my dad after his by-pass surgery, and although my sister thought it was Hocus, Pocus, my dad thought he felt better after a session.
Like I have said before, we are all different, personally, I think it works for me!

Yeah definitely, you have to believe in it and respect it to get any benefits from it I think. I was told it is especially helpful after surgery and my cancer center even has a reiki master in their office full time, which I thought was very cool!

Lots of things seem to work better when we believe they'll help which is why placebos often work as well as or better than actual drugs for some people.

However, I'm not so sure that reiki requires a belief that it will help to work. I've only had one reiki treatment when I was coming down with an agonizing intestinal flu several years ago. While I was willing to try it, I didn't believe it would help to any extent.

It really was remarkable as it completely eliminated all my symptoms for about a half hour and left me thinking that maybe I could make it through my work shift.

Unfortunately, the symptoms gradually returned until I had no choice but to go home, I felt so bad.

The practitioner was honest enough to admit that she'd only completed Level 1 and felt that if she'd been more experienced she might have been able to aid my body in eliminating the flu completely. I'd like to think that, but it proved to be the most excruciatingly painful flu I've ever had, so I'd have my doubts about that.

I woke in the middle of the night moaning and screaming in pain until our two cats came down the hallway meow-asking what was wrong with their mommy. Whew! I sure hope never to be that beastly ill again as long as I'm still shuffling around hereabouts.
