I have 3 more rad tratments out of 26, ending Wednesday.  I am burned, purple red in many places.  But, the silver lining is that my bi-lateral mast has killed so many nerve endings that most of the burn doesn't hurt cuz I can't feel it!  I am so glad to have this almost over.  10 months since diagnosis, I am ready for it to end.
Good luck to everyone.

I've completed 19 of 33 total treatments. 8 of those will be a boost to my chest wall, since I had a left mastectomy. It's going well, but the fatigue is definitely notable and I'm thirsty a lot, so I'm drinking lots of water.
Has anyone been given Cavilon to use to protect your skin? I'm given two packages per week by the nurse to use on Mondays and Thursdays. It's a skin coating made by 3M that has protected my skin extremely well.
I hope all of you undergoing radiation are doing well. It's so much easier than chemo but does present some challenges.
Love to all of you. Have a good weekend!

I have just finished rads and was left with an itchy sunburn. I have Biafine cream, but at $57. I'm not so sure it is doing much. Benedril helps the itchiness.
My underarm area got the most fried and is still tender..more like 2nd degree burn than a regular sunburn. After 2 weeks, it's fading nicely.

Don't put anything on your skin which has not been approved. Although it may look like an ordinary sunburn, it is not. Your skin is going through a lot and needs to be treated carefully in order to prevent further damage and infection.

Don't wait for anyone to say something to you about burns or peeling. I was told from day 1 that I needed to let them know what was going on. After all, I'm the one who will notice stuff first. Case in point...I'd seen my rad onc on a Monday and although I was somewhat red under the arm, it wasn't bad. On Tuesday morning, I noticed things had become much worse overnight although I had no pain. I told them about it immediately when I arrived for treatment. My rad onc saw me right after treatment that day and gave orders for my boost to begin the following day instead of the last week. This gave my arm a chance to rest for seven days before resuming the regular treatment. I have five left to go and have been able to stay on schedule despite some rather respectable burns! Fortunately they've been superficial and I've had no pain from them.

RE: Radiation Tips and Experiences - Wednesday, August 27, 2008 9:28 AM
Hi everyone,
I just completed my rads on 8/8.   31 rads and 5 boosts.  I did not experience any problems except for a little fatigue until my final 2 weeks.  I had what seemed like an extreme sunburn.  When my skin started to peel it would blister first and was very painful in the creases of my underarm.  My boobie was as black as moma's frying pan.  [sm=sick.gif]Ladies make sure you use the aquafor everyday and
pay attention to the underarm and sorrounding areas (anywhere the radiation hits) I paid more attention to just my breast area which is why I think i ended up suffering.  Also with the inkmarkings and the greasy aquafor, I was ruining my shirts.  I bought a bunch of  the tank stlye t-shirts and wore them everyday under my clothes, It created a barrier between my skin and clothes.  For some reason the Tums deodorant did not do much for me and the hot summer weather left my arm pit smelling like fried onions...not cute on a diva.  My onc suggested cornstarch powder, it helped.  Anyway, the enitre experience was way less painful than I imagined and I was competely terrified in the beggining only to find out that the experience was really a peice of cake.  The peeling and discoloration started to subside immediately after my last treatment, by the end of the first week of no treatments, I saw a huge improvement and felt great.  Just keep sloothing on the auquafor and you will be fine.
Be encouraged!

Hi Ladies,
This is my first post, although I have been on before looking for different information since I found my lump in 05/08.  I start radiation on Monday, 28 sessions total and am grateful for all of the information I've found concerning creams, lotions and what to expect physically.  Can any of you offer help in reference to the emotional side effects?  I have had 2 small panic attacks - one during the simulation and one yesterday during my dry run and final xrays.  I am allowed to bring in CD's to listen to, which will help, but am also looking for any other tricks that may help.  Hugs to all........
