RE: Radiation Tips and Experiences - Saturday, October 18, 2008 8:50 AM
I'm not red at all anymore. That color went away probably a week after I stopped rads. What I'm talking about is this "perpetual" tan. It looks weird. Of course no one sees it,so I'm not having a problem with it. I just didn't know if the discoloration will ever go away out of curiosity.

I had pretty severe side effects. I am in a study,so I had 10 treatments instead of say 35. So,I had over 3x's the amount of radiation each time. My skin was a mess.

Everything looks really good now...just the "tan."

And btw,I wore a bra when I "had" too. I found it terribly uncomfortable and itchy when I did. Most of the time I creamed myself up...what a saving grace that stuff was...and walked around in hubby's t's.

I begin radiation on Monday and go back to work on Wednesday. I have already started putting cream on the area per the advice of my rad onc. I also have an aloe plant, but thought I would save that for Monday. The nurse told me to put the cream on after treatment. I have treatment at 3:45 and thought I should put some on when I get dressed in the morning. I was wondering what everyone thought??

I am new at this (7 treatments down 28 to go) but my radiologist onc told me to only put moisturiser on at night.  She said any good thick moisturiser I liked would be fine.  Put it on nice and thick at night and then when you take a shower in the morning you would wash off any left over stuff.  And then you would be OK for treatmetns.  I have my treatmens at 4:20 and have been using my moisturiser at night only and all the time on the weekends.  I am a little pink but that is about all.  Of course I am just beginning.  Hope you hear from some of these more experienced ladies who always have such great advise.

By the way has anyone experienced nausea or headaches. It seems I keep a headache all the time now, especially after treatments and the nausea just kind of sits there.  Appreciate any obersavations anyone might have.

Have a wonderful Monday.  Here in Florida it is a beautiful cool, sunny day.

Hi Gretchen,
I finished my radiation treatments at the end of July 05.  I still have a tan "block" on that side, although it has faded quite a bit.  I have a Irish/English background, fair skinned, freckle more than tan etc.

I have a question for all you radiation experts out there.

Has anyone experienced rib pain? I've noticed in the last two days my chest hurts. Just on the side I had radiation on. "Thelma" is kind of sore also. Maybe it has to do with my being a right side sleeper?

Any thoughts?

Gretchen,

I am sorry no one has answered you back.  I think they have all gone from this link.  I have never gotten an answer back.  I had been so excited when I found this link.

As for your rib pain, I am not sure what that might be but they say the radiation will weaken your ribs.  Could you have hurt them?  This may be an important thing to bring up with your dr.

Today will be my 15th treatment, with 20 to go.  I am a toasty red right now with some pain, but other than that I am OK.  My energy level is down, but I am trying to work and do this too.

Take care of yourself and I hope you get some answers.

Love and Prayers, June

I wanted to bump this up for those having rads or starting soon. I just had my simulation & got my tattoos & start my rads on Wednesday. They gave me a tube of "Special Care Cream" & said they will give me something else to try if that doesn't work. Hope all goes well & I don't burn. Think I'll get the Aloe Vera gel mentioned here just in case.  Nice thing is the hospital I am going to, gives free valet parking for rads patients.

Hi Vera,

Good luck with the rads.  It ain't too bad :)  I used X-claire cream prescribed by my doc (terrific) and also silver nitrate cream when the burn got bad (the last two weeks).  They both helped very much.  Even now, I put body lotion on every day and keep the boob extra moisturized.  I have my implant exchange later this year and I want to do every thing I can to keep the skin looking good.

Hug,
Elaine

I have had 15 treatments so far & have just started to tan. I use Aloe Vera several times a day. I have a huge bottle in the bathroom & have a tube I carry with me to put on after my treatment before I get dressed to leave. I have had some minor itching & use Hydrocortisone 1% & that helps. I have no fatique; I do not wear a bra, only a cami/shelf bra (I'm a B cup so it works okay for me). I drink LOTS of water to keep my skin hydrated. I use Crystal Rock natural deodorant only on the weekend. Everything is recommended by my radiation onc.

Not quite half-way done, so far so good.

Take care,
Val

Thanks Elaine & Val. I think I will see about getting a couple camisoles & good thing it's winter so the coat will hide the fact that I won't wear a bra. I think I'll go buy an Aloe Vera plant tomorrow. Good luck Val with the rest of your treatments!

Re: RE: Radiation Tips and Experiences - Sunday, January 25, 2009 10:14 PM
i start tomorrow. I was told 28 treatments. I keep reading most everyone has a30+ so i know in the back of my mind that some time along they way they will mention the additional boosts. I think they don't want you to know ahead of time that you are looking at more like 7-8 weeks vs 6 in the beginning. I have to travel an hour for treatment so i am hoping beyond all hope that 28 stays the number but i know it won't.
I appreciate all the good words here and i hope to find some good aloe to combat the burns. I am more worried about the pain as my incision has been drawing bad since surgery in June and i know it will draw more once the rads start. My onco would not let me take advil during chemo for some reason only aleve and tylenol. Aleve bothers my stomach so i think i am going to go back to advil and hope for the best. I neeed the anti-inflamatory.

I know exactly what you mean Lisa. I've been told all along it will be 6 weeks of radiation. So I go for the simulation & they tell me I will start the rads this Wednesday. Well, that's not a full week, so I think those sneaky Dr's will have me going for 6+ weeks, probably for 33 treatments.
Sorry can't help you with the Advil, Aleeve problem. Good Luck to you!

I start Rads on Friday, has anyone used miracell oil?  My rad onc. said it is ok to use.  I have tissue expanders in place and want the exchange to go smoothly later this year(sept).  Thanks for the help.

Re:Radiation Tips and Experiences - Friday, January 30, 2009 11:46 PM
I will give an update of my rads treatment & that will in turn bump this up for current January rads sisters. I have a rash now after 20 treatments. The rads nurse told me to stop the Aloe Vera for one week & use Hydrocortisone 2-3 times a day, "slather it on", she said. The itch was slight all week, but as I write this now, it is DRIVING ME CRAZY! I can really see the "box" of treatment on my right breast. The small portion of arm pit that is getting radiated feels like a bad sunburn, but doesn't look bad.

When I started the second half of my treatments last Friday, (GREAT - a hot flash as I type ), I was told I would have 14 of these Intensified Modulated Radiation Therapy treatments to go along with the first 14 regular treatments for a total of 28. The rads onc told me I would have a total of 33 treatments, so I figure I will have five boosts.

I can't wait until I'm done-can't imagine how my Thelma is going to look by then!

Good luck to all undergoing this lovely time in the tanner!  (just kidding, I know it's not funny...)

take care,
Val
