Re:Should I quit radiation treatments? - Tuesday, December 15, 2009 8:22 PM
Lisa
I never got really burned, just a little pink towards the end.  Some of us burn some don't.  Don't think the drs even know why some do or don't burn.  I am very light, and sun burn easy but had an easy time with rads, a little tired towards the end but overall did well.  So just consider yourself fortunate if you don't burn.  I used tons of 100% aloe several times a day.
Keep hanging in there!!!
Hope and strength,

Re:Should I quit radiation treatments? - Friday, January 08, 2010 12:43 AM
Hi Ladies,
I have my first radiation treatment tomorrow. So,I have been reading through this tread for advice.I've learned alot today.
I'm not sure what cream I will be using....but was wondering?? Can I use the aloe vera with the cream I get from the Radiologist? I will be doing 36 treatments and I'm ready to get started.I had to have some scans done so I'm about 2 weeks behind from when I should have started.I have extreme fatigue now so I can't wait for more!!
Any advice I could receive would be helpful.
Hope to hear from others who are going through radiation now or have finished and can help us through this next path on this journey.
Hope everyone finds some relief and has a great day.
Hugs,
Cindy

Cindy, when I met with Rad Onc a few months ago she said they'd either recommend or prescribe cream (cannot remember which) However, my aunt had rads a year ago and highly recommended Trade Joe's Midsummer's Night Cream (with aloe)

Someone sent me a bottle (no TJ in Maine) and it is wonderful...  of course I'll need a new bottle for rads since I this one is almost used up :)  I'm curious to see how the one they give and this compare.

Good luck tomorrow....  I'll be following your progress closely esp the fatigue - hope it's not as bad for you as the chemo and post chemo were.  Are you fair or darker skinned?   I'm very fair so Lisa's comment was interesting.

Hey ladies, haven't been on much lately. But wanted to add my input here about the RADS. I started December 30th, so I have about 14 or 15 of the 33 done? Not really pink at all yet, but it's still early right? This week I am exhausted, course I feel like I'm fighting a cold/allergies? My eyes burn, my nose is drippy so who knows if the fatigue is related to the RADS or just not feeling well? Anyway, my rad onc gave me cream in a tube to use, she said don't use anything else over the counter and to let them know if this doesn't work or I have any issues. I see the doc every Thursday, and do rads on my lunch hour every dang day!!

The cream I got from my rad on is called: Dimethicone Protectant. It's in a white tube with some purple on it. I put it on in the morning, and after treatment, then again at night. If I remember at night anyway!

So ready to be done with this. I was going to do recon in the spring, but the rads got pushed back because I had a hell of a time healing from the mastectomy. So the soonest I could do it would be June or July now. Well one summer was already screwed by Chemo, so I'm taking this Summer off I hope! I have family coming, and plan on surprising my daughter with a trip to Disneyland. So my goal for recon is September or October?

Good luck to everyone :)

I am on my 8th rad treatment and as much as I hate having to get zapped every day I am extremely grateful for the technology! I am having a irritation on the breast area, under arms and nipple area. I haven't heard about the vitamin E or Aloe. I was given the goo and some powder to top it off, (eeeeoooo!!) Really sticky stuff, I will ask today about the E and Aloe. Love the support, am new to this websight.

Girfriday -

Ask about X-clair which is a prescription.  It helped me and at the end I was prescribed a jar of silver nitrate.  I healed very quickly.

Hi everyone.  I posted on the newcomer forum last August during that horrible time during the diagnosis (after 2 nodes were positive yet before the bone scans were negative) , and haven't been on since.  I ended that thread when I was mentally better, and thanked everyone for their support.  I've been through my chemo, 4 A/C the 4 taxol every 2 weeks, and will be starting 6 weeks of rads. I think I may forgo the bra (36C) and start with those shelf camis you get in Costco.  At least in the winter I can wear baggy sweaters! My time is everyday at 8:45 - no more relaxing coffee and paper after the school bus leaves.

Hi all -
I just started my rads, 3 down, 30 more to go. I was given Aquafor to use, really goopy, at least 2x day.  Also, a list of other suggeseted lotions and cream (Neutrogena, Eucerin are some brands) as well as Vit E and aloe.   Had to get 2 extra tatoos (I now have 6!) not sure why the last 2 on my first day of treatment.  Right under the nipple too - owie. You just have to laugh, right?
Farla - 36C too, shelf bras aren't the same! :)
It's difficult to get to the end of this string, but good to read all the past experiences.  Should we start a fresh string?
Good to hear from everyone as we go thru this!

Hey everyone - I had to take a break  - too many kids home from school for a while.  I had my simulation last week, and 6 tatoos.  So of course stupid me I kept calling it stimulation!!!  Oh well, one can hope....  One of my tats was right under my arm - and it was numb, thankfully!  I got my time changed to 9:45, I was thinking I wouldn't put on deodorant until after the treatment - right? and wash it off every morning before I go for the rads.  Or are we supposed to use cornstarch only?

I have been diagnosed with DCIS and they are recommending lumpectomy and readiation.  I would rather get a mascectomy - who has faced a similar situation and what did you decide?

Hi Barbara, I was diagnosed with DCIS on January 27 this year.  When my surgeon told me my options, I was like a mastectomy????  You are telling me you got ALL the cancer and now you want me to consider a mastectomy.  I opted for a lumpectomy, they went back in to take wider margins, and now I am starting my 3rd week of radiation.  I believe this is a personal choice, very personal choice.  Me personally, if the cancer comes back, I will then get a mastectomy.  But from all my research ( I am a teacher, so I research, and then research some more), lumpectomy, radiation and possibly tamoxifen is very successful for DCIS.  Mine was estrogen receptor positive, so I will be able to take tamoxifen, if I decide too.

My advice is listen to your gut.....what is it telling you?  That is what I finally did, I had everyone telling me what THEY would do, then I just found a quiet spot in my head an decided what I wanted to do.

Good luck Barbara and keep in touch!

Barbara,  Repost your question in "Sound Off", then more of us will see it and have the opportunity to respond.

As for me, I had to have a mastectomy, so I can't answer your question.  Good luck.

My recently learned tip: If you have to have any kind of surgery, or anything done, be mindful of putting something adhesive on the radiated skin area. I had EKG pads on my breast for a surgery, and it tore of the skin underneath and is causing some problems for me. I didn't think about it and obviously neither did the medical staff who put them on my poor breast after I was knocked out from general anesthesia. All of the others came off OK, but the one that was on my breast is proving to have been a big mistake!

Farla...regarding deod....someone told me about "Toms of Maine" product line...I asked the doctor/nurses first and they said "yes".  I found it on the bottom shelf in Walmart, near the other deod.  It's an "all natural"-type product with known of the things they don't want on us!  My appt is 4PM, so I use it in the morning.  (I used this company's mouthwash when I was going through chemo).

I'm finished with Day# 13 and no skin issues yet.  The nurse told me to get in the habit of putting cream on 2x/day several weeks BEFORE treatment--just to get into the habit.  I've been using Eucerin "calming lotion" that I rec'd at the Look Good/Feel Better program.  We also received Lubriderm "Intense Skin Repair"...the container says, "body lotion with itch relief".

The doc. told me I could use OTC anti-itch cream (hydrocortisone) if I experienced itching.

Re:Radiation Tips and Experiences - Monday, April 12, 2010 12:33 AM
Regarding lotion to use- my rad onc gave me "Natural Care Gel" to try, which seems to be like aqua-phor and the nurse equated it to that. But I'd read on here about the "Jeans Cream" and had emailed them to ask for samples. They wouldn't send me samples directly but did send my doc some and I have to say I like it better. My rad onc said it's basically the same and has what they want anything I use to have- no alcohol and some other characteristics/ingredients that I can't remember, but he was curious to see if I liked it better than what they gave me. To me, it feels more like a lotion and less goopy and gel like, which I prefer. So I'd suggest that if anyone wants to try something different, google Jeans Cream and ask them to send some samples to your doc. They sent a bunch to mine, and even re-sent it when I gave the wrong info the first time and basically had them send it to the oncologist and not the rad-onc. So I was also very impressed with their customer service.
