RE: New Book.. - Sunday, June 08, 2008 1:46 AM
I am sorry but I couldn't help but chime in.  I hear all the time," well it could be worse"and I get that but right now, it seems pretty d#%##n rough to me.  Cancer has done a number on me and sometimes I just want to acknowledge that.  Don't get me wrong I am grateful to still be here, and I do know it could be worse, but don't belittle what I am feeling now as being ungrateful.  I have never considered cancer a gift.  Yes I have learned things from it but I think I could have learned them a heck of a lot easier way.  Boy that felt good!  Just like some of yall , I needed to vent!!!
Thanks!  I will be picking up that book also.

For the record, I do love Komerville and I love everyone of you!  Without all of you I would be completely lost.  Thanks everyone!!!!

Kate - I think a CANCER SUCKS cruise is a great idea. For one thing, I'd give anything to see a group picture of survivors wearing CANCER SUCKS T-shirts!

Hug,
Elaine

Wow, it looks like I'm not alone in this one!  I find I'm so much more careful now what I say to someone who's going through a bad time--I'm probably one of those who didn't always say the right thing before....but I'm sure I never said "cancer is a gift."  As Shelly says in the book "If you think cancer is a gift, you're never going to be invited to my birthday party!"

The one place where I differed from her was on the term "survivor."  She won't use it for herself because she feels since she had early stage BC she didn't survive a death experience....  I don't mind calling myself a survivor, even if it just means I survived treatments!

And I don't mind an occasional pink ribbon or two... but I was so glad when my best friends presented me with a quilt that DIDN'T have pink ribbons on it--I don't want that to define everything in my life....

I'll be interested in seeing what you all think of the book..

Kerri,
I am so with you on this quote. Trust me I love my God but if I hear that again I am going to scream. Or this one "just a bump in the road". I don' t think so. How about a head on collision with a mac truck. I am so grateful that I have people who try to say the right thing but we should publish a book. FIFTY THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A CANCER PATIENT.
1) God only gives you what you can handle...

Anyone want to chime in and add..

How about "Lance Armstrong had such a positive attitude and he beat cancer!"

You know people who say that(its a gift???) have never come as close to mortality as we have.
"Dear Cancer,
I'd like to return this "gift" please. it really doesn't fit, has holes, is too big, too small, DOESN'T WORK FOR ME!"
Yours truly (and I mean it)
       Ruth

Yup thats what I'd say if I could.  I have learned life lessons along this way, but a gift?  Give me a break!  I could have learned those another way.  Not a gift, but it is a chance to make life different, more in focus for me.  I am glad, and grateful that cancer didn't choose (if thats what happened) one of my children instead.
I am strong and I can persevere!
Love Ruth

I have a "Hey cancer you picked the wrong bitch" shirt and I have a special "Got Chemo?" shirt that I wear to each one of my chemo sessions.   They have a bunch of humorous shirts & mugs available on the web.   Got mine at cafepress.com.

I should have been wearing one of my cancer shirts today.  Just had chemo on Friday, so I'm really sweatty & pale today. I was working from home upstairs when the doorbell rang.   I ran downstairs and answered the door, the UPS man was there and he looked startled.   After he gave me the package and I took it inside, I wiped the sweat from the top of my head and realized that I answered the door not only in a T-shirt and boxer shorts, but bald headed too!  [sm=whew.gif] I was embarrassed for about 30 seconds then had to laugh to myself.

Take care all.
