Re:My tips for chemo... - Monday, August 01, 2011 1:08 PM
still no answer on my HER2/neu equivocol status.  my onc is waiting to hear back from some more colleagues what their experiences/outcomes have been.  though now i do know that my test result was 2.1 and the positive range starts at 2.2.

in two weeks i will join your ranks.....my first chemo tx is scheduled for aug 15th.  to say i'm not scared would be a bold faced lie.  i know the road is going to be bumpy and long but i have every intension of hanging on and riding it out all the way to the end.  AND coming out on top :)

Hi - I am having the port cath (?) put in on Friday - not trying to sound like a baby but does it hurt???  It looks really uncomfortable!  I can take pain pretty good but I really hate needles and stuff.

Was also wondering - I had a mastectomy on left breast but am now considering if I shoud go ahead and do the right one as well to cut down on chance of recurrence.  Has anyone done that?

Hi Becky,

Most of us had some light sedation having the port in and I've never heard of anyone not getting this, I did'nt feel a thing and awoke when it was all over so hope you do too!
It may be a little sore for a week or so but it will become your best friend and reduce the stress and waiting time of your treatments:)

As to your other question I did'nt have a mast so cant really help, did you have the BRCA testing done which may show you are more at risk if you carry this gene??
Maybe check out the recon/surgery forum as I know this has been discussed before so you may find some tips to help there and good luck with the port!

I don't mean to add my two cents BUT my sister gets chemo so here are my tips as her co-pilot...

Ask us to help you

Assign us tasks..even if you can do it yourself..ask us because we want to be helpful

Make us sample the mouthwash with you..because ya can : )
Hold our hand because we are just as scared as all of you!!!

Stay strong ladies!

Thank you Diane. As a co-pilot I often feel helpless and want to do everything and anything I can to help my sister. Here's other things SHE has done to me..

Made ME get weighed in to
Made me go get the snacks
Made me watch as they poked at her port...because I hate needles
Only let me help her with the bandages
Only let me see the scar

You guys should realize you have all the power and control over us when your going through this!! I get sucked into alot of things. Hospital stays, long talks, making friendship bracelets....

If I could trade places with her I truly would in a heart beat. We have a really good ANTI MOUTH SORE rinse routine...she has never got them..if your interested I can share.
Be strong, fight hard, cry WITH us, then laugh laugh laugh!!

4mysis - You are a blessing and I am sure your sister appreciates everything you do. My boyfriend of 10yrs has been by my side through all of this. I don't think I could any of this without him. Please do share your mouth rinse routine. So far I have been lucky enough not to have any, as of yet...but never say never.
