Re:The waiting room!!! - Wednesday, August 11, 2010 5:48 PM
My Onc ordered a PET for me and an MRI of my breast.
At first she said she thought my breast tissue was just getting thick because of the changes in me hormonally. She was touching me very lightly with long motions, when I took her hand and showed her the lumps specifically she agreed it was more than thick tissue she said...oh yes, there it is, actually I think there are three..duh.
I then, pointed out the lymph nodes that are also enlarged and she said oh yes, I feel it now.  geez.  seriously if there was another place to go, I'd be so out of there.
Anywaaay,  I have a PET for next Wed, and an MRI for next Friday.
Hopefully, it won't take forever to figure out what is going on.
I just don't see how it can be more cancer since I've just gone through all that chemo.

Marianne - WTF??  Pardon my French.  I hate that you just went through chemo and now this??  Whatever happens, you will take care of it and you will be fine.  That's the bottom line --- Also, if you are not feeling confident about your docs please make a change if that is possible for you.

Hi all,
I'm like Marianne but my reaction is similar to Elaine's. WTF!!!  I found a lump in my other breast and had my onc check it out.  He said it didn't feel like anything to worry about so we should wait and see.  I waited a week and went back at which point he referred me back to my surgeon.  The surgeon was concerned until he felt another lump and then another lump.  For some reason that made him feel better.  He sent me to have an ultrasound.  The radiologist says that two of them are clearly benign but he wasn't 100% on the other one.   The surgeon called and said that they were "probably" benign but to schedule an appointment to discuss possible removal.  Should I push for a PET or MRI?  Can they really tell if it's cancer through those tests?  Or is a biopsy the only way?

Malcolm2009 - go for the biopsy.  Sorry you have to do this, but you need to know so you can kick it's ass!

Marianne - thinking of you - oh it is so stressful to go through tests so soon.  Try to be strong and calm, we are all praying for you.
Malcolm - I am not a radiologist, and know little about MRI, but I believe that they can tell by the type of uptake if something is suspicious.  The other advantage is that the MRI can find other, real little areas of concern. The gold standard is the biopsy - because you actually have the tissue there to look at.  I believe they want some imaging because of the number of lumps.  I'd get the MRI first, but remember the biopsy is definitive.  Good luck, I'll pray for you, too.

Malcolm, I think they'll biopsy me if the scans indicate they should.  Not sure why they don't just biopsy it to begin with, except that they are just looking closely first.
These tests are scheduled for me, I half expect them to call me and tell me the insurance won't cover them both.  It seems a really expensive way to explore these lumps that the dr. doesn't really think could be cancer because of the chemo I just did.  I was wondering why they don't simply do an ultra sound and a biopsy.

Marianna & Malcolm,
Beg, plead, demand a biopsy.  You would think a simple bx would be more cost effective (if that's what they're worried about) than test after test.  Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers, and hoping for b9 results.

Re:The waiting room!!! - Tuesday, August 17, 2010 6:55 AM
Thank you everyone, I had my 1st dose yesterday morning and doing really well so far. I have been drinking a ton of water and eating good while I still can. I have the neulasta shot today. Did not take the caritin that some people talk about, I guess I will wait and see and take pain meds if needed. My onc said 1 other person told him about the claritin but he can't see why it would work?
Is this one of those things they don't want to tell you about as it seems so many women know about and are using it??

Karen,

I think claritin is an anti histamine so really should'nt work as a painkiller I would think, something else would be far more effective possibly for bone pain. (should you get it)

In my experience the onc and nurses were very forthcoming to suggest anything that would minimze the side effects of chemo.
