Re:The waiting room!!! - Wednesday, August 18, 2010 5:28 PM
So I met with my surgeon today (Mom went with me).  He truly feels that the lumps are benign after looking at the ultrasound.  He would absolutely tell me if he was the slightest bit concerned about anything he saw or felt or heard me say.  I do trust him.  He respects my mental state and says that the decision is up to me.  He said, if I lose any sleep over this, it's not worth it and we can remove the lumps.  If I feel comfortable and am not worried, then he recommends a follow up in a couple of months.  I feel relief after speaking with him and will probably wait a couple of weeks to see how I'm dealing with it.  Thoughts?

Malcolm...Personally, I would "wait & see".  Surgery has its own risks.

I received a call from the office that does my mammograms...my first "post-treatment" mammos are scheduled for Aug. 30.  They can't "find" my previous films!!!  According to the records, I signed them out and took them to the cancer center (same hospital/facility)...and the cancer center said they were returned to me!!!!  ???????????????   I have NO recollection of most of this (which means nothing with my chemo brain in full swing!)...so tomorrow I need to #1 call the cancer center...and #2 start a search here at home!!!!  Fortunately, the last few were digital...

Malcom, my first thought would be to tell you to have the biopsy which would be sensible.
However like you, I respect and trust my BS and in year two when I faced a similar dilemma despite my better judgement I took his advice and waitied and all was well.
I still feel the hardened area but it's simply scar tissue.

If you're at all worried or losing sleep over this I'd definatly have the biopsy as in my case I felt okay with it all.

Laurie, I think they like to give some time for rads tx to settle down before doing another mammo, I finished rads in April and had a mammo at the end of summer that same year.

Karen, just what you need NOT!!!   I hope you find them:)

Yeah Tricia that's what the Onc had said, wait 6 mos after rads to get the radiology out of my system so we don't see a false positive on my mam. I was curious as to why Karen who finished her rads up a month earlier than myself is now getting her mam? How can this rule of thumb differ so much?

Re:The waiting room!!! - Thursday, August 19, 2010 11:14 AM
Ok...Here it goes...I have been having pain in my right leg and lower back for awhile now (months).  I refused to acknowledge it until my boys summer vacation was over.  I was diagnosed 2 years ago in July and it was not  a very happy summer vacation, so I was not going to do that again.  My boys are going back to school monday and I have an appt. tuesday with onc.

The pain is not consistent.  Sometimes I feel it and other times not at all.  I have been very active this summer with the Half Dome hike (14 hrs) and then Santa Cruz, Disneyland, and Monterey.  I will usually feel the aches and pains when I go to bed, but not every night.   The right leg seems weaker than the left and if I have been sitting for awhile I limp when I first get up, but after about 10 steps or so everything is fine.  I have not taken any pain meds for it, but I have just started glucosimine/chondroitin (sp).  All of my blood work is fine, I just had a follow up appt Aug 3.  I am somewhat freaking out, I am not sure how I will handle it if it is mets..I am scared, really scared...I was stage 3 and still had 5 pos. lymph nodes after chemo..That is freaking me out...Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers..I think I am going to demand a scan.  Any suggestions on which one would be best?  Thanks everyone for being here and supporting all of us...

Hugs,

Susie

Susie,

I'll bet anything it's a problem in your back that radiates to the leg.  I have some of the same issues.  Let us know.

Hug,
Elaine

Susie,

I very much doubt you are dealing with mets by what you have said, it could simply be the extra exercise or the aromasin so try not to panic.

When I had a scare earlier this year my onc ordered a bone scan, this was followed by an mri and pet.ct, in my case the pet was clear, mri inconclusive and the bone scan did show a hot spot.   It was too small to biopsy so I had to wait two months and repeat the mri which was fine:)

Shrotly after this I did have a painful bout of sciatica though and had to see a PT, so the pain and hot spot could have been connected to that!

I think most onc's go down the bone scan route first, good luck and sending lots of positive vibes to you:)

Marianna and Tricia-  Thank you for your kind words and encourgement..I wish I could  stop my brain from going down the dark and gloomy canSer road, I am really trying to stay positive. I am going to request a bone scan.  Do pet scans show bone mets?  I know a pet is more sensitive, right?  I will figure it out on Tuesday...Marianna- my prayers will include you as well, Thank you.  Good news is that I am going on a party bus Sat. with 19 wonderful friends to go wine tasting in Paso Robles (california) for a girlfriends 40th bday..Woo hoo....

Susie,

Pets are far more expensive so a bone scan is done first usually, they do detect cancer at the cellular level but a bone scan  is always a good idea first:)

Have a wonderful time with the girls and put all this out of your mind until you get back, I'm sure it's nothing !!!!:)

Susie...hang in there.  I was online today "just checking" about metastatic cancer...I've NEVER thought of it before today...but my bones sore--rib cage area.  I have my mammo on Monday and following Mon. with onc.

Update on mammo films:  I'm not sure if I'm happier that they found my films...or that I haven't completely lost my mind!!  I had NO recollection of them returning them to me...so glad my recollection was correct!!!!  lol  The WONDERFUL nurse coordinator got on the "case" and tracked them down.  She is so great when you need someone to get something done QUICKLY.

Laurie...regarding my mammo.  My onc said to stick with my regular schedule.  My normal annual mammo has always been done during the summer...so he said to stick with that schedule.

Susie,
I'm so hoping that your leg pain is a result of a hernated disc or something b9 like that.  You have been kicking a$$ doing so many great things this summer.  Praying that you keep on, keepin on, please stay positive and think like Elaine!

Marianna, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and praying for b9 results on the MRI.

Please think of my Mom  as she goes for an US and second mammo tomorrow. I'm in the waiting  room for her( and she doesn't even know she's here!)

Oh, Susie - sciatica?  Arthritis?  Oh, it could be lots and lots of things, but I know our minds go off the deep end when we are faced with ANYTHING that may be bad.  I think pet scans are better for looking for metabolic hot spots - tumors are growing, the rest of us is not so they have an uptake of something that they inject in you.
I remember my bone scan - I was a difficult stick, and they spilled the stuff on my clothes, so my scan was really positive, but close to the surface.  They had me undress and get rescanned, but my mind went wheeling and wheeling until they said I was ok.

B9,B9, please!

And Marianne - did you go to the onc today?
Karen - my films are all on computer, and digital, so they can give me all the copies I want, and they still have them.  Where did your end up being?  Really, our brains are just being too bombarded sometimes for this stuff!
Hi Tricia and Laurie, and Sharon - good luck with your mom!
