HI Bekka (Tuesday chemo buddy!)...well, today was my hair day too...I got out of the shower and couldn't even get my hair pick through it and it was in clumps like a ratted mess!  I cried as I kept pulling it out and throwing it in the trash can.  It just makes me so sad, but I guess you know the chemo is doing it's job and killing those little cancer critters!!!  I made an appointment with my hairdresser for Thursday morning at 9:00 to do my hair...she said she has never had a request to shave a woman's head due to chemo...but bless her heart, she is more than happy to do it!  She is also going to style the wig so it is ready to go! I guess I will wear it for the first time at my 15 year old son's football banquet on Saturday...a good day to test it out!

Yes, I had my husband buzz my hair at the first sign of it coming out, I didn't want that experience of it falling out for days.  He just buzzed it so then I did have a week of really short hair falling out, my sleep cap had to be washed every day for a week!  Now my kids are more used to me in a hat than the wig as I usually wear the hat if I'm not going out!

Tricia, can you (or anyone else) tell me more about Taxol side effects?  Finished the AC(!) and start Taxol on Tuesday.  Having some dread of the unknown, even though AC was tough, after the first time it at least settled into a fairly predictable routine.

Did you feel much bone and joint pain?  And it is delayed like AC or right away?  Did it last the whole two weeks between treatments?

Re:Winter chemo ladies! - Friday, December 03, 2010 5:03 AM
Hi Reading Mama,

I had the taxol at a lower weekly dose with herceptin rather than the dose dense every two weeks so did'nt suffer the bone pain many people complain of but did have a little.
I found taxol to be so easy to tolerate after the a/c and side effects were minimal for me.  I did get some neuropathy after a few weeks (tingling and numbness in feet and fingers) but it did'nt last too long.

Side effects if any, were usually after a few days of getting the infusion, I also lost a couple of nails so keeping them short is a good idea.   The first infusion is given a lot slower so allow more time for that, but I needed no anti nausea meds or neulasta and my hair grew back!:)

I hope someone who had the DD can give you an idea of what it was like for them, anyone I know who had the bone pain said it was easily managed with pain meds though so good luck!

Thanks Tricia and Bekka (I'm a Tuesday chemo lady also!).  Its funny how with AC, everyone I've seen has had 4 sessions, but with Taxol it seems very varied, from my 4 to Bekka's 6 to Tricia's 12...

I am taking Herceptin also, along with the Taxol, although the Herceptin is every 3 weeks.

We'll see this week.  Good luck to all of us on Tuesday!

Hey, Tuesday chemo ladies...ready, set, go!  I have not heard anything about taking Herceptian for myself....I will be on round two tomorrow and then will have two sessions left...the halfway point for me!! That calls for a McDonald's Caramel Frappe' afterwards!!! I find that it's the "little treats" to myself that help me get through this sometimes!!!  Good lucky everyone!  We have each other!!!!

HI!  My halfway point of chemo was yesterday!! WOO HOO!  All went well and I too was there a long time yesterday...am doing Taxofore/Cytoxan...  Was there from 1:00-4:50..had to see oncologist too, so that pushed it back a bit.  Feel good this morning but had a restless night because of the steriods...last day for those today.  Fooled some people with my wig....that was a great feeling!  Thanks for checking on us Winter Chemo ladies!
PS   there was an older gentleman sitting in the recliner next to me that fell asleep and started snoring..my friend that sat with me got a kick out of that!  Take care ladies!!!!Debbie

Congrats Maureeen on getting the a/c done, which I'm sure is the hardest to tolerate, good luck with the taxol:)

Debbie, I had an old lady beside me once that did that too lol, least it made me smile on a bleak day:)
What a great feeling to be halfway, little by little you're getting to that finish line and will be there before you know it and feel so proud you did this for yourselves ladies:)

Re:Winter chemo ladies! - Saturday, December 11, 2010 3:54 PM
Well, I had a rough week :(  My left arm was pretty beat up from the last a/c treatment, so we decided I needed to use my right arm (which is my good arm).   It took them 4 times to get a vein and then at some point, the IV moved (we think when I went to the bathroom) and the Taxol leaked into my tissue.  Luckily, it isn't toxic and didn't hurt, but my arm got swollen. (and they had to switch back to the left arm so 5 needle pricks in total).   You know it's bad when all 3 onc nurses are surrounding you!  I guess it is not that common, or at least not the swelling to the extent I had it.   Between the steriod and the swollen, itchy arm, I didn't get much sleep tuesday night.   The nurses were all very anxious to see me the next day when I went back for the nuelasta shot.  They put some benadryl directly into the skin, which helped the swelling go down and I got some cream for home    I have to put heat on it, the swelling has come down, but its still a little swollen and red, which they said would take a few weeks probably to go away.

So this made up my mind to have a port put in!!!  I have a consult on Tuesday and hopefully surgery Wed, Thur or Friday.   When the chemo was only going to be 8 treatments, my dr was against it and I was willing to wait and see what happenned, but after this time and now knowing I will also get Herceptin for 1 year, its time to get it done.  I don't regret not doing it earlier, but would definately regret it if I didn't do it now.  You should have seen me, I couldn't use either arm, one arm with the IV and the other swollen and all iced up - my mom had to hold juice with a straw to my mouth so I could drink.  (and we were there from 10:30am to 5pm, incl., the blood work, seeing the oncl nurse, etc...).

Also had an unfortunate reaction this week, although the drs are not sure to what.  Had a variety of symptoms, all within about 1/2 hour, including stomach pain, dizziness, weakness and finally throwing up.  Unfortunately, all this happenned just after we arrived at my son's long delayed 7th birthday party.  Luckily he and my daughter were happily bouncing and didn't see how sick I was - I felt like I was back in college, sitting down on the floor of the bathroom and then getting sick in the grass outside!  All I can do is laugh at the timing, I haven't been sick like that the whole time and of course it happens right as his party starts.  Luckily my mom was there to drive me home and I started to feel better even on the drive home.

I've been surprised how tired I've been, not sure if its low counts or just a reaction to everything that happenned, and my knees, calfs and back hurt, yesterday it was tough to walk.  Today I have been sitting most of the day, trying to limit my walking and it seems its getting a little better, hopefully it will pass by tomorrow, which will be 5 days after treatment.

Reading Mama,

I'm so sorry they had to use your good arm, generally they avoid it just in case of lymph, but agree with you on getting the port asap!  I waited until my fourth a/c to get it and I do regret that.

Keep taking any anti nausea meds you have and drink lots of water, taxol is known to cause bone pain as you describe so you may need to ask for some meds to help with that.   As to the tiredness, rest as much as you can should you need to, it really does make a difference.

I'm so sorry you had such a tough week but hopefully things will settle down now for the completion of the taxol, herception should'nt cause you too many problems so I really hope the worst is behind you:)

((((hugs))))

Well I wasn't suppose to start chemo until after Christmas, but here I am.
I had my port put in yesterday and now I'm starting with my first treatment today. My husband was able to change his work schedule around so he could go with me to my first one. If he had his way he'd be at every single appt or anything else with me. Unfortunately that just isn't fesable.
Hopefully I don't start losing any of my hair until after Christmas. Here's crossing my fingers.
Good luck to the rest of the ladies who already started or are about to start!

Hi Gina.  Today is your 1st chemo.  I'm so glad you got your port as it makes everything so much easier and it saves you veins.  I hope everything goes well for you today.  Don't forget to take your anti-nausea medicine before you get nauseous.  I waited till I got sick and then it was too late.  Best wishes.   Mary L
