Good luck with the rads Lucinda, I was fine and found it a breeze after chemo.  I used natural aloe vera after treatment which I'm sure helped and just went pink and itchy rather than red and sore!

Does anyone know how far out from radiation can you be and  still get pneumonitis? I am on Nexium for an irritated esophagus and acid reflux and my PCP thinks I may have some damage to the nerves in my esophagus from rads that were over in 04. I did have some unusual problems with rads and a lot of inflammation that lab said was from radiation.

Thanks,
MJG

I just saw this MJG, I think pneumonitis can happen any time.

I also take nexium daily and have some damage which they think was from chemo but who knows??

Hi everyone.
I am starting rads in a week or so, should I start the nexium again?  Have a lot of people used it for rads, too? It was wonderful during the chemo (for the steroids they gave me).

Hi Farla, no you don't need to take nexium and it won't help you with rads.  MJG and I only continue taking it due to tummy issue's from chemo!    Good luck with the rads, it was a breeze for me and hope it will be for you too.

Hi Lucinda, I don't get on here and the chemo forum as often as I used to, but do try to keep up with everyone.
I remember feeling just as tired during rads, but hang in there...you're definatly on the home stretch!!!  xx

I finished my treatments in Oct 2011. Dble mastectomy, chemo and rads. I thaught I would feel great but then found I have arthritis in every joint which they say has nothing to do with treatment. Over the last 4 months my energy level has deteriated and I have a heavy feeling in my chest with an occasional cough. My oncologist ordered a cat scan to rule out scarring etc but it came back that I have two very small lung nodules and have to go for a pet scan now. The good thing is they are very small but it does mean the pet scan won't be able to be accurate and it will be a wait and watch time. I don't know if the rads increase the possibility of cancer in the lungs. I know if you have it as a child it can cause it as an adult Originally I had two invasive stage three tumours one lobule and the other tubule which had spread to 3 lymph nodes qnd the armpit itself. My cancer was eastrogen + but have been unable to take the meds due to extreme bone pain it caused. It had me down and out on the sofa, not a quality of life.
stage 3 invasive ductal and lobular carcinoma in left breast with insitu lobular in situ 3/9 nodes positive
Bilateral mastectomy 2/7/11 (rad in left right breast was neg for any cancer) Immediate recon with expanders
4 rounds A/C 4 rounds Toxal  6 weeks rads
HER neg  prog neg  eastrogen positive

Hi Corrinne,

I think any form of rads increases our chances of a different cancer later in life but hoping these nodules are B9 and please keep us posted. I had a lot of bone pain from the A1 initially too but my Onc suggested a daily supplement of Glucosamine/Chondroitin  which helps a bit, please keep us posted.

Re:what the heck is pneumonitis????? - Sunday, January 10, 2016 2:30 PM
Hi I am starting chemo January 21st for stage II breast cancer. Cancer was found in my lymp nodes. Radiation is being recommended and I am trying like heck to find an alternate treatment or if i would be making a terrible decision if I were to decide against it. I have concerns with radiation all the damaging effects it has on the tissue, lungs and body.
Any advise?

I only know one person who decided to short change herself regarding treatment. She skipped chemo, had minimal radiation treatment via that new 5 day routine, which has now shown not be as effective as the longer course. She had a local recurrence after three years. At 5 years she was diagnosed with metastasis to her bones. She regrets the course of treatment she chose at her doctor's urging and her own case of extreme denial. Alternative treatments only work for the pitchmen who sell them.
