reconstruction - Tuesday, February 11, 2014 3:36 PM
I had my bilateral mastectomy on 9/24/13 and had an expander put in at the time of the surgery. I am now getting ready to have the expander taken out and the implants put in and would like some advice. First of all I  have been having pain the last 2-3 weeks from stretching it feels like although I haven't had a saline fill since the first of December. My doctor thinks it is just because I'm starting to get feeling back in my chest. However I am concerned that once the implants are in I'm going to continue to feel this way. He is planning on putting 600cc implants in and I'm concerned that's too big. and even if I go with 500 or 550cc I will still have pain the rest of my life. Any suggestions/comments?

Hi Kendra ~ I too had pain through out the expansion period. I totally despised the expander!!!  However, I had instant (and I mean instant!!) relief after the exchange surgery.  Yes, there is a period of time adjusting to the saline implants, especially for the pectoral muscles, but it is soooo much better than the expanders.  I'm also filled at 525ish cc which sounded like a lot, but it's not.  I'm very please with the final look.

Good luck with everything,
Leah

Hi Kendra:  The most uncomfortable part is the expansion.  The implants don't bother me.  The swap surgery does take a little while to recover from no different that the other surgeries.  The muscle still needs time to heal.

Every now and then I get pains as it seems that a nerve is "misfiring".  The strangest thing about all of this is when the areas start itching and no scratching will help it.
