chemopause...not paused??? - Wednesday, March 25, 2015 6:22 PM
Hello there. It's been over 10 years since my Dx and surgery and 10 since I began chemo, which gave me instant menopause. It was non-stop hot flashes for the first 3-4 years, then it did ease up some, but even until yesterday I was having about a dozen flashes a day. Now all of a sudden....hello period! Has anyone close to 60 had a reversal of menopause caused by chemo? (Ovulation test in my near future, maybe?)

Hi Mil,
I can sympathize with the hot flashes. I had them before bc, almost 7 years ago and they are still going strong.

I would make an appointment to see your onc or gyn and would be concerned about new bleeding, especially at your age.  ( no worries I am the same age).  Are you taking tamoxifen? Tamoxifen and vaginal bleeding can signal a potential problem.

I do hope it's nothing more than your hormones signaling their last hurrah!

Please came back and post your progress.

Hi Milmar,

Yes I'd ask for an estrodial test for sure and I haven't heard of this happening but would talk to my Onc about it.

Hi Sharonma, I had stage II HER+++ bc and did AC + T and 52 weeks Herceptin, so no Tamoxifen. I cannot believe I'm having cramps a month before my 59th birthday!!! Good thing I have a sense of humor. Must be payback for all the moaning I've done about the hot flashes!

Definitely get it checked out. I would have episodes of what I believed to be a period that didn't get quite knocked out by chemo. In my case I was wrong. The culprit was actually a good-sized uterine fibroid that was partially out of my uterus and yes, I would feel some cramping as well presumably due to the location. It would bleed periodically a few times a year. Once it was removed, all of my symptoms vanished never to return again.
